I have been making an effort to read more this past month, that means at least one book a week. I try to mix all sorts of genres, lengths, and indie/mainstream authors. And yes that means I read people like Stephen King as well as all the indie authors who I support. Now I am a big fan of Stephen King, and as a fan the first thing that caught my eye about Elevation was its size. I am used to Mr. King's epic novels, novels that you could knock a person out with. Elevation is on the opposite end, its a small and light read, though it still manages to provide an emotional punch. At the heart of the story is a man who had a mysterious affliction that is slowly stealing his life from him. He could cry and ask why me, or he can live what is left of his life to the fullest. He chooses the latter and that is where I felt a true connection with this work. What I took away was it doesn't matter how much time you have in life, it is how much life you put in to the time you are given. Sounds corny I know, but this message resonates with me and made me really love Elevation. As someone who lives with chronic illness, well it's something that I need to make an effort to live myself. This is something different for Stephen King, but still very much in his wheelhouse. If his 1000+ page novels aren't for you, maybe give this little one a try. 4.5/5 stars. I am so happy to announce that edits are done for Very Friendly Beasts and it will be out December 4! Next week! You can preorder it now though for only .99 cents! Sequel to Not So Silent Night, though both books can be read as a standalone. I am so happy to say that I will be at my favorite local bookstore here in Albuquerque, Title Wave Books, for Small Business Saturday tomorrow. Not only will I be there selling books and maybe some art, so will several other local authors and the store itself will be running sales all day! Come out and support local authors and a great local business while getting something for all those on your shopping list! I and the other authors will be there from 10 am - 2 pm. There will also be some music, readings and who knows what else with an open mike.
Title Wave Books is located at: 2318 Wisconsin St NE, Albuquerque, NM 87110. Hope to see you there! Tomorrow is Thanksgiving here in the United States. (Seriously how fast is this year flying by?) So I am in the mood to give some thanks myself. This has been a tough year for me in many aspects, but lately I have been focusing on seeing the positive in life and guess what? There is a lot to be thankful for!
Recently I took a new day job that suits my health and lifestyle so much better. I even just got a few more hours there which can only help my financial situation, so now I make more working less hours. And I actually like the job! I am busy while at work and then once I go home there is no stress or phone calls. I even got a little Thanksgiving bonus so score! Our car broke down earlier this month, but we were able to still get to work on the buses and I am thankful for that. My brother helped us find someone who could fix the car and not charge too much, so we were able to get the car back. And my brother helped us out a lot while we didn't have a car. Super thankful for that. Just a few weeks ago our dog got really sick. That vet bill really set us back, but thanks to some art sales I could handle it. And our boy is doing better so I am super thankful there. My spouse took a big step towards their happiness this month and all went well. Thankful again. I have some great friends and a loving family. Thankful a lot for them. I have a loving spouse and am thankful for them. I am still writing and publishing even though this has been a rough writing year for me. Edits are going well for my upcoming Christmas novella Very Friendly Beasts. I didn't think I'd ever finish that story but I did and it will be out soon. I am so thankful for that and for my editor for pushing me to get it out despite some depression and self doubt getting in the way. This month I have been working on some horror short stories for some upcoming anthologies. Three are almost done and that makes me thankful. I am also starting work on more fantasy and sci-fi novels and hope to have many out in 2019. And last but certainly not least, I am very thankful for my readers. Readers of this blog, of my social media, and of course of my books! I wouldn't be an author without you! Happy Thanksgiving to everyone! I am so happy that one of my favorite authors, Leona Bushman, has a new fantasy series coming out soon and the first book, Highland Magic, will be out December 20! It is available for preorder now here for only .99 cents! Want to know more about it? Read on! An evil darkness forces Mykel Campbell to reveal his magical powers. Mykel leaves his beloved Highlands in search of a wife. He has two requirements: loyalty and comeliness. Lyall has plenty of both and more. She possesses a spirit of adventure he found appealing. His attraction to her could nae be denied. Verily, his good fortune is complete. Until the darkness strikes Lyall's village. An evil which takes magic to defeat. Lyall resolves never to marry. She could nae imagine finding anyone who would accept her magical abilities, much less her strong skills for reading and numbers. Then Mykel Campbell visits their village, and her heart is no longer hers, her body like a foreign land. He came in search of a wife. Could she dare hope? Then an evil shadow full of creatures of her nightmares encompasses the land, and her family is in peril. Mykel swears his sword and magic to protecting them. Would the two of them survive to have the love of a lifetime? Or would evil triumph? I haven't had any book reviews here on the blog in awhile and I apologize for that! But I will be making up and reviewing several books for the rest of the year and beyond. I have been reading more and I think that is helping my own writing. Now onto the review! Christmas time is fast approaching and its the time of year that I like to get in some holiday romances. This one is one of the faves that I have read over the years. First off let me tell you that I love anything based on mythology, Norse and Greek mythology being my favorites. As you might guess from the title, this one is based on Norse gods, with Hela, Loki, and Thor all making appearances. Now these are not the gods of the movies, but based on the actual mythology of old and I love it! Hela is an innocent yet strong goddess looking to escape the loneliness of her life. Her father Loki grants this (though why anyone who knows Loki would trust him to be fair I don't know) by allowing her 12 days on Midgard during Yule time. There she meets Bjorn, a striking Viking warrior who intrigues her but who seems to hold nothing but mistrust for her. Hela has 12 days to see if being mortal suits her and to discover if love is in her future. I will not spoil the end, but it's very satisfying. This was a well researched short, where you can tell that the author loves mythology as much as readers such as myself do. Well written, complex characters for such a short book, and a love story that leaps off the page. If you want a sweet and romantic read with a little something extra this holiday season, I highly recommend Hela Takes a Holiday! 5/5 stars! Link: Amazon It's already halfway through November, where is the time going? I thought that I would give a little mid-month update. It is NaNo month and I am writing away and working on edits for a short novella that will hopefully be out next month. I am also working on a couple horror short stories for some upcoming anthologies. This means that I am behind on my NaNo novel word count, but I am already way ahead of where I was last month. My editor told me that NaNo is not only about hitting a daily word count, it is about sitting down and writing each day. I am doing that and that makes me happy. This has been a rough year for my writing, but I am hoping that this is a turning point for me, that I get back on track with my writing. I have so many stories left to tell. This is a short update but I have lots of writing left to do! Will I hit 50K this month? Maybe. Maybe not. But I am sure trying and that is all that I can do!
I am so happy to be able to reveal the lovely cover for my upcoming Christmas/werebear novella Very Friendly Beasts! This is the long awaited sequel to Not So Silent Night, one of my most popular releases ever! Very Friendly Beasts is off with my editor and I hope to have a release date and preorder date for you very soon! Find out how Mikhail, the soon to be Alpha of the great Russian Werebears fares when he meets one foxy challenge! Coming soon to a Kindle near you! And now, may I present the cover for Very Friendly Beasts! (Note Friendly Beasts is the name of an old Christmas carol and the inspiration for the title.)
I am excited to be taking part of yet another fun art show tomorrow night! This one is an 80s themed art show. The 80s for me remind me of my childhood and I think you can see that in my art. I am pretty proud of the Rainbow Brite piece I did. Want to see the finished piece? Come to the art show tomorrow night! (or you can find it on my social media). The show will take place at OT Circus Art Gallery here in Albuquerque, from 5-9 pm tomorrow 11/10! I hope to see you there!
