The husband and I finally got to see King Arthur Legend of the Sword this past holiday weekend. Shockingly we had the entire theater to ourselves and in some ways that makes me very sad. I really liked this movie (as long as I don't think too much about the original story of King Arthur). I thought that it was visually stunning, I loved the music and special effects, I thought that Charlie Hunnam and Jude Law were perfect for their respective roles. It was the perfect summer movie, full of action and fun. My husband summed it up perfectly when he said it was Snatched set in medieval times. I really don't know why it was panned so badly and has done so badly in the theater. It makes me sad because there were supposed to be more films in this series and it looks like that won't happen. Too bad, I would have loved to see them.

I had rather high hopes for The Promise, but somehow deep down I knew that the reality would not live up to my expectations. First, I am still very happy that this movie shined some light on a very little talked about part of history, the Armenian genocide. The parts of the movie dealing with this atrocity to humankind are touching and heartbreaking. I am a big fan of Christian Bale as well, and I will say that his American journalist is one of the few likeable characters in the movie. The female lead, well she makes me a little sick and want things to not end happily for her. I guess that means the actress did a good job, as I really just found her character opportunistic and lacking true empathy. (If you have seen the movie, I am sure you can guess what scene I am talking about. After her lover talks about what happened to his wife. I mean come on!) Over all I think that the love triangle took too much from the movie, combined with unlikable characters, it made this a hit or miss movie. Go see it if you are bored and need a cold place for a couple hours this summer. But it's not what I had hoped for. Time for another movie review, this time for the Anne Hathaway film Colossal. I am not quite sure how to categorize this movie. Is it drama? Sci-fi? I just don't know and I think that tells you a lot about this movie. Did I like it? Some parts I loved. Some parts confused me. I really like the concept and some of the messages in the movie, but I also was lost in some parts. I will say that I went in thinking that this might be a rather light-hearted movie and that was not the case. This is much more serious and darker than the trailer leads you to believe. All in all I am not sure how to judge this movie. If you are up for a different sort of monster movie, something that will make you wonder what it was all about, then give this movie a chance. I am not disappointed I went, I just don't know how to describe the film and sometimes that can be a good thing. Time for another movie review! And this time it is another small release independent film, the animated My Entire High School Sinking Into the Sea. A friend at work told me that it looked weird and slightly disturbing, so you know that means I had to see it. Now it has a pretty good cast (even though I am NOT a Lena Dunham, I can over look that for this movie). The animation is trippy, so much so that there is a warning for those who suffer from seizures at the beginning of the film. (I do in fact suffer from seizures, but I was okay other than adverting my eyes a couple of times just to play it safe.) It is a short movie with some entertaining and funny moments. Not my favorite independent animation film of the year (that belongs to My Life as a Zucchini) but it is an entertaining way to spend a night. Not many people have heard of this film, so if it is playing it near you and you have some time to kill, why not give this movie a try? Time for another movie review! I will admit that my husband and I were pretty excited to see The Lost City of Z after seeing the trailer. It looked exciting, full of adventure, had a good cast, and was based on a true story. Maybe we had set our expectations too high. Way too high. The movie is very slow moving, a lot of it could have been cut, the main character is just not that likable, and well lets just day that the ending is a bit of a let down. Okay, the hubby would say that it was a total let down. This is one of the movies that we have seen recently that I might just suggest you skip. It is just way too long and way too short on story line. This past weekend the hubby and I finally went to see Ghost in the Shell. As we are both pretty big anime fans and had both seen the anime version back in the 90s (and then again right before we went to see the live action film) we were both pretty excited despite some bad reviews. And all I can say is that we both really liked it. The movie itself is visually stunning, as is Scarlett Johansson. But what we both really liked about the movie is how it raised the issues of science/ai/human boundaries even better than the anime. There are ethical issues abound here and lets face it, with technology advancing we are not too far away from the world of Ghost in the Shell and choices being made in it. I know here in America not many people liked this film, but both the husband and I did and we recommend giving it a try. This past weekend my husband and I went to see the independent French horror film Raw. The title certainly defines this movie correctly. This is a raw and visceral movie that takes coming of age and the changes young adults go through to the extreme. A young woman, who happens to come from a family of strict vegetarians, goes to veterinarian school where shall we say the hazing is extreme. Away from her parents for the first time a she begins to explore her beliefs, her sexuality, and so much more. Soon after being forced to eat some questionable meat in a hazing incident, one which her older sister basically forces her to partake in, Justine learns that she has a dark hunger inside of her. While there are certainly some disturbing scenes to watch in this movie, I found it to be a more psychological horror about facing the darkness within than just a film of blood and gore. As long as you don't have a weak stomach, and you enjoy an interesting and distressing movie, then I highly recommend this film. I give it 4/5 stars just because it is not for everyone and one scene in particular made me turn away ( a rarity in my movie watching.) This past weekend my hubby and I had the rare indulgence of taking in two movies! We went to see T2 Trainspotting on Friday and I could not have been more excited. I remember the original Trainspotting from my freshman year in college (yeah I know that I am dating myself.) If you saw and loved the original movie about a group of misfit and drug addicted friends struggling with life, then you will love to catch up with most of them in this sequel. The characters, like myself, have aged 20 years and are now coming back together at last. Some have been in jail. Some have kicked drugs. Some have remained the same. There is tension between many of them, remember there was a betrayal at the end of the first movie, but these people fit together and time and distance has not changed that. This was a lovely romp of nostalgia and I give it 5/5 stars just for that! I also love seeing the original actors and this movie once again has a great soundtrack. If you liked the original Trainspotting go see this sequel! Finally getting another movie review up! This past weekend my husband and I went to see the animated French film, My Life as a Zucchini. This was a quirky little movie that has a rather sad premise (children in a group home) but ends up giving you all the feels and leaves you on an uplifting note. The animation is great, I love how the characters look, especially their eyes; and the story is sad, fun, and real all at the same time. My only regret is that we did not get to see the film in it's original French, I feel that the story might have flowed a little bit better, but it was still a great movie despite anything that might be left in translation. If love slightly oddball movies about underdogs, I highly suggest this one!
Back with another movie review, this time for the based on a real life story movie, Lion. I know, I know, it has been out for a couple of months, but hey I sometimes fall behind on things. Anyways, my husband and I went to see it and boy are we both glad that we did! Talk about a great movie that will fill you with emotion and more importantly hope! I rarely cry, but this movie brought happy tears to my eyes.
Lion is a story of a young Indian boy who gets separated from his brother and then lost on a train that takes him thousands of miles from home. Not knowing how to get home, or even the correct name of his village, all seems lost. Eventually he gets into an orphanage and gets adopted by an Australian couple. Years later memories comeback about his first family, and he attempts the impossible, finding the needle in the haystack that is his hometown and his family. It's a great story that while sad in places, the movie leaves you with a feeling of hope and possibility. The two actors that portray Saroo are incredible. Young Sunny Pawar is fantastic as a scared and lost boy. Dev Patel takes over as the adult Saroo and also gives a moving performance as a man torn between his past and his present. (Plus can I just say Damn! Dev has certainly grown into a hot young man! Damn!) I give this movie 5/5 stars and will be buying it when it comes out on DVD. I am also going to purchase the book by the real life Saroo that the movie is based on. We need more movies like this in the world. |
