This past weekend my husband and I went to see the independent French horror film Raw. The title certainly defines this movie correctly. This is a raw and visceral movie that takes coming of age and the changes young adults go through to the extreme. A young woman, who happens to come from a family of strict vegetarians, goes to veterinarian school where shall we say the hazing is extreme. Away from her parents for the first time a she begins to explore her beliefs, her sexuality, and so much more. Soon after being forced to eat some questionable meat in a hazing incident, one which her older sister basically forces her to partake in, Justine learns that she has a dark hunger inside of her. While there are certainly some disturbing scenes to watch in this movie, I found it to be a more psychological horror about facing the darkness within than just a film of blood and gore. As long as you don't have a weak stomach, and you enjoy an interesting and distressing movie, then I highly recommend this film. I give it 4/5 stars just because it is not for everyone and one scene in particular made me turn away ( a rarity in my movie watching.)
