Time for another game review. Today I am reviewing a fairly new game, My Little Scythe. I'm not going to lie, I have never played the regular Scythe and I mainly bought this game because it is super cute and I thought that the minis would be fun to paint! Not that I have gotten a chance to paint them yet but hopefully soon! So the spouse and I finally got the chance to play recently. Set up is easy. Instructions are pretty concise and clear. This is a very simple and easy game to play. I think that the dynamics will change and the game will be a bit more challenging with more than 2 players, but we only had two players at the time. This is a great game for younger players I think, I can't wait for my almost 4 year old nieces to get a bit older so that I can play with them. From what I understand of the original Scythe, this is a much shorter game and much friendlier. Not that there is not some strategy involved in this game. Over all a really fun, light game. And the minis are too cute for words. 3.5/5 stars!

So I have been piling up some new (to me at least) games lately and am finally getting a chance to play them, that means its time for some game reviews. Today I am reviewing Santorini which came highly recommended to me from someone at my local game store (Ettin Games and Hobbies for those of you in the Albuquerque area).
Santorini is a very quick and easy game. It didn't take long to learn the rules at all and we managed to fit 3 games in a short of amount of time. The game is very visually stunning (see the picture below) as you actually build the game in 3D. The artwork is super cute (which was one of the reasons I was drawn to it) and with changing strategy based on what cards you draw and how you and your fellow player(s) choose to play, there is a lot of replay-ability. This is a fun two to three player game where you try to be the first player to build a three story building for your god. There are different Greek gods in the deck and each offer you different abilities. It's as simple as that really. This is a great game to play when you need something light and not too time consuming, but that still requires strategy. As my husband and I play a lot of games at night after he gets off work late, I have a feeling this will be getting a lot of play. For the ease to learn, prettiness, fun had while playing, short amount of time needed to get a game in, and the chance to replay multiple times with different strategies 4/5. I highly recommend this game if you are interested! Some of you who read this blog might know that my husband and I are both pretty big game nerds. If you didn't know that before, well now you do. That means from time to time I like to take time to review new games or games new to me here on my blog. Games are a pretty big part of my life and they are something that I want to share with my readers. The moment that I saw the box for Barker's Row I knew this was a game I would love. The art work is whimsical and hello I am all about anything circus related. This is a fun game where you only add to the fun by getting in character. What you do it you and the other people playing are Barkers, people trying to get the circus goers to come into your stands and see you freakish displays. It's a blast to shout about "the miraculous, gruesome, horrifying..." creature on your card. The game mechanics are easy, though I found it best to learn the game through a Youtube tutorial as the actual instructions were a little confusing. It's quite simple, you pick cards that allow you to play attractions in your hand. Each attraction you play allows you to add two meeples to your stands. (These are some of the coolest meeples of any game I have ever played.) Some attractions have special abilities that will allow you to fill your stands faster. The first player to fill there stands wins. That's pretty much it. I have only played a two player game thus far, which was rather quick to finish. My husband took a commanding lead at first, but the game seems to have mechanics that even play out and it ended up being pretty close at the end. I really want to try this in a four player situation as I think it will just add to the drama and role playing of the game. I really enjoyed Barker's Row and think that this is going to make it into a pretty regular rotation of game play at my house. Easy to learn and play. Cool look to the game. 4/5 stars for this one! So as I have mentioned here on my blog before, my husband and I love to play games and make the local game store our hangout. So that is why I have started giving some board and card games reviews here on this blog. This is part of my everyday life and why not share it with all of my lovely readers.
Today I am reviewing the deck building card game Heart of Crown. I love this game. Love it. I am a big fan of deck building games to begin with, but this one has to be the best that I have played. The basic concept of this game is that you build enough wealth to "back" a princess in a race to claim the thrown. Then you build a domain and try to get enough influence for your princess to win the thrown. There are two different markets from which you build your deck and there is a lot of strategy as to which cards you add to your deck as well as which princess you choose to back. My husband and I have played quite a few games in just a short time and are never bored. There are so many different card combinations that you can get from the basic market that you are always playing a different game. You also can alter your playing strategy so that you stayed challenge. The mechanics of the game are easy to understand and games go by at a fast pace. I personally love the art work, being a big fan of anime. I have already bought the two expansions that are currently available (which both fit in the base box, something that is rare in the game world at times). The only small complaint is that you need to buy card protectors right away as the cards started to bend after one play. No real big deal though since we were planning on that anyways. Though there are 300 cards in the base game and 60+ cards in each expansion, so that is a little chunk of money. Still, this is my favorite game at the moment. A+ review. If you like card games, deck building, and having fun go get Heart of Crown! Okay so as some of you may know, I am a big fan of card and board games so I thought that I would start reviewing some games here on my blog for fun.
The first game that I am going to review is Hotshots the Cooperative Wildfire Fighting Game. My husband and I played it for the first time a couple weeks ago at Ettin Games here in Albuquerque and really liked it. We originally played it to see if it would be a good gift for my brother, not thinking that it would necessarily be our cup of tea since we usually like more fantasy based games. However Hotshots surprised us. While it is a very easy game to learn and set up, it offers enough custom-ability to suite your playing level and for replay-ability. It is a cooperative game for 1-4 players. Basically you are a group of hotshots trying to stop a forest fire before it scorches too many tiles. You can set up the tiles any way that you like, which can make the game harder or easier. This is a game that relies on some strategy based on what characters you play and what you choose to do throughout the game, but also on chance as the roll of the dice determines a lot. It's a pretty quick game and was quite fun to play. Over all I really enjoy it and am thinking about getting it for myself and not just my brother. 4/5 stars! Locals in Albuquerque can pick a copy up at Ettin Games, or the link is below for those who live elsewhere. Link: firesidegames.com/games/hotshots/ Today I thought that I would give a shout out to one of my favorite local businesses here in Albuquerque, my favorite gaming store Ettin Games & Hobbies! My husband and I love this store and are there every week to play games and of course buy new games for ourselves. They have a wide selection of table top, role playing, and board games for sale as well as a game library where you can try before you buy! The owners are so nice and this is definitely the most welcoming game store that I have ever been in. It's clean, it smells great, and is very inviting! A good group of people go there and everyone is friendly.
i just can't recommend them more! Go to their website for more info and then head into the store to check them out! www.ettingamesabq.com/ So my wonderful husband recently bought me the Jim Henson's Labyrinth game now that it was back in stock. Now I love Labyrinth the movie and was super excited to get this game and finally get to play it. And it was as fun as I had hoped! It is an easy game, with rules that are not hard to follow. Fast paced and gives you the feeling of being part of the movie! Let me say that it is better if you are very well acquainted with the movie, some cards you pull require you to know quotes from the movie, something I had no problem with. We played with two people, but I am looking forward to playing with five so that I can be Jareth! I want to be the baddy what can I say? With 2-4 players it is a cooperative game, all of you working to save Toby from the Goblin King in time. I might be biased because of my love of the movie, but I loved this game and recommend it to avid gamers and newbies alike! Sheer fun!
