I had rather high hopes for The Promise, but somehow deep down I knew that the reality would not live up to my expectations. First, I am still very happy that this movie shined some light on a very little talked about part of history, the Armenian genocide. The parts of the movie dealing with this atrocity to humankind are touching and heartbreaking. I am a big fan of Christian Bale as well, and I will say that his American journalist is one of the few likeable characters in the movie. The female lead, well she makes me a little sick and want things to not end happily for her. I guess that means the actress did a good job, as I really just found her character opportunistic and lacking true empathy. (If you have seen the movie, I am sure you can guess what scene I am talking about. After her lover talks about what happened to his wife. I mean come on!) Over all I think that the love triangle took too much from the movie, combined with unlikable characters, it made this a hit or miss movie. Go see it if you are bored and need a cold place for a couple hours this summer. But it's not what I had hoped for.
