I'm back to trying to get more book reviews up on this blog and I am getting started with a great book! Demons and Wraiths is a fun, fast paced paranormal mystery. This story is short but full of action. I could not stop turning the pages and finished this book in record time. I love the authenticity that the author brought to the characters and to the Celtic mythology that is the basis for much of the story. I felt invested in the characters and really can't wait to get to know them better. I am really hoping that the author creates an entire series based on these characters and this mythos. I highly recommend this book if you are a mythology buff (like myself), lover of paranormal books, or just like a good mystery. I give this 5/5 stars and eagerly await the next book! As an author I am always reading. I especially love to read writing books, reading and learning about my craft at the same time. I recently just finished How to Write Science Fiction and Fantasy by Orson Scott Card. This is a very practical and straight forward writing book. I have some other books that go more in depth about world building and such, but this one is a great fast read that will make you stop and think about your writing in a very rational way. It really did help me with a current story that I am self editing, and that is the goal of any writing book, to help you with your own work. Since this book is quite helpful and easy to use, I give it 5/5 stars!

I just finished a fun read, Soulless by Gail Carriger. Vampires, werewolves, a strong female lead, and all set in an alternate English history? Of course I had to read this book! For the most part I really liked this book. I thought that the plot was engaging, with enough excitement and intrigue to keep me turning the pages. The characters were fairly strong, especially the lead character, Alexia. The only real problem that I had with this book is that there is some head hopping that takes place, especially in the beginning of the novel and it sometimes took me a moment to realize we were in someone else's thoughts and it would take me out of the story. The head hopping seemed to happen less as I read, or maybe I just became better at ignoring it. For that reason I am only giving this 4/5 stars. I still plan on reading the rest of the series, but I am hoping that editors have taken care of point of view hop problems. Still this is an exciting paranormal read and I would recommend it to others. I am finally reading more again! Some health issues had been making it hard for me to read and concentrate, but I have still been struggling to get back to reading much more.
This week I just finished Song of the Dark Crystal by J.M. Lee. This is the second book in a YA series based off the Jim Henson movie the Dark Crystal. I read and liked the first book and could not wait to get the second one and it did not disappoint! This story picks up right where the last one left off, with a very small group of Gelfling trying to get the word out about the Skeksis betrayal and the trouble that all of Thra is in. These books are prequels to the movie of sorts and I love exploring the world more. If you liked the movie (I have some friends who found it creepy) then you should pick up these books and give them a try. You won't be disappointed. I give this book 4/5 stars, well worth a read. link: http://a.co/3TPbfFd If you have been following this blog for awhile, you should know by now that I am a fan of indie author Dawn Brower and have reviewed several of her books. I am a fan of the previous books in this series and Ms. Brower did not disappoint with a Sanguine Gem. This is a fun read with a good story. Gemma is a kind, caring and yet feisty heroine who not only wants to be married to the man of her dreams, but wants him to love her as well. Liam has always been the gem in Gemma's eyes, but his interest in her took longer to develop. Now due to a despicable man trying to ruin Gemma forever, Liam finds himself married to a woman he once rejected and whom he now loves. As these two find their way towards each other, a good story develops with intrigue, some funny moments, and romance. I give this book 4 stars and look forward to getting to the next one in the series.
Link: http://a.co/1aIEmIr I have been on a bit of a Joe Hill kick lately and recently just finished the last book of his that I needed to read, his collection of short stories 20th Century Ghosts. Now I have to wait for his new release later this year! As with any collection of stories, some are stronger than others. In this collection there are horror stories, much like the novels that Mr. Hill is now known for, mixed with other oddities and strange stories that really are unique. This was an entertaining and fast read and I truly did enjoy most of the stories, as for the ones I didn't like so much, well I'm sure that there are others out there who love them. You can't please everyone all the time. Still I give this collection 4.5/5 stars and suggest you pick it up, especially if you are new to Joe Hill and want a sampling of his writing style. I still prefer his full length novels, but to me the longer the better as long as it is a good story. (sorry I had written a better review by my blog here ate it before I could publish.)
Link: http://a.co/fycQw7Y Finally getting back into some book reviews here on my blog. I just finished reading Nos4a2 by Joe Hill and I really liked the book. This is the fourth book of Joe Hill's that I have read and I must say that he is now one of my favorite authors. That kid might be going somewhere. LOL
Nos4a2 just might be my favorite Joe Hill book. It is full of horrors, from real life and beyond. Vic, the heroine in this piece, is tragically flawed and makes me feel for her as if I personally knew her. Nothing is completely black and white in this story, everyone had both good and bad in them and that makes it a very compelling read. I highly recommend this book. 5/5 stars from me! Go read it! Link: http://a.co/ifTBqAU So I have a confession to make... watching Ancient Aliens on the History Channel is one of my guilty pleasures. I love to watch it while I write. I will watch the entire marathon on Fridays when I get the chance. So of course I had to get the companion book, Ancient Aliens! It's a fast and fun read, filled with pictures and theories from the show, though some of them do go more in depth. If you are a fan of the show, then this is a book that you will want sitting on your bookshelf!
As an author I am constantly trying to find and read new books about the craft of writing. I read a lot of such books, but my favorite is still Zen in the Art of Writing by the great Ray Bradbury. When I am feeling bleak and down about my own writing, I love to reread this book. It is such an inspiring read. It really helped me in the month of May. I had found myself in a writing funk and reading this book was the kick in my pants to write five short stories in May. I really needed that kick and that is the highest praise I can give a writing book, it actually helped me write! If you have not read this book and you are an author, go find a copy now. You will thank me later.
If you have read some of my book reviews before, you know that I do love YA series in addition to all the other genres that I read. Recently I just completed the Miss Peregrines Peculiar Children series by Ransom Riggs. This is a very interesting series. I love how the author finds real life old and peculiar photographs and then creates characters and scenes from them. The fist two books in the series are fast paced and leave you wanting more and I loved both of them. The third and final book in the series Library of Souls, was a little slower and dragged in a few places, though it does end the series in a very satisfactory manner. Over all I give the whole series 4/5 stars, all three books are definitely worth a read for their uniqueness.
