Instead, the orange-red glow which now permeated our world still managed to seep in. Did true darkness even exist anymore? I wondered if any of us would ever know. Our world was dying, and I doubted we could find a way to stop it. Deciding that sleep would elude me again, I got up and went to what we called a library. We were in a large bunker, deep underground. You would think I’d have to turn on lights to walk around, but no, the glow from above somehow had sunk down and embedded itself in the very walls. The radiation was spreading. It seeped into us right now even as most of us slept. The end was near, and we would go out with a whimper instead of a roar. I went into the quiet room which housed our books and meager computers. I had read the history books about the world before the red, before the war, at least a dozen times. They sounded more like fairytales, for we did have a copy of those as well, than history. Yet, I knew it all to be true. I had been born in those times even if I didn’t remember them. My father and I had survived the initial blasts and fights, though we had lost my mother. My father was ex-military and had helped us set this base up, helped us survive. Then he went on a mission one day and never came back. I was ten. That’s when the library, the books that told of my father’s time, became my solace. Over time, I had become our little colony’s historian, our record keeper, our researcher. Alana the Wise was my nickname. I didn’t feel wise. My research meant nothing. The past could not help us. I could not help us. I have some dark reads to recommend to you this week from Leona Bushman, though they are not Halloween themed per se, her Darkest series is certainly perfect for reading on an October evening while snuggled under a blanket and drinking your favorite beverage! Sabrina, a witch, had grown up on tales of the horrors of werewolves. She'd never thought much about it, never having met one, until one bit her against her will, seemingly proving her mother and the rest of the coven right. Treyan found his mate, but was confused that she had no idea about her pack... Then he discovered her real heritage. A witch. Of all the people to be mated to, he had to find a witch, the mortal enemies of the werewolves for half a millennia. And on a supermoon month. He vowed to help protect her, even from her own coven if necessary. But would it be enough against centuries of prejudice, or would they both die in a fiery maelstrom by the coven's hand? Link: https://books2read.com/u/4NZeJ9 Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Witchy-Wolf-Leona-Bushman-ebook/dp/B07QLFVWM7/ The legend: Kingdom of Alba early 4th century The men rode in with their spears and swords, demanding food and bringing a new religion. They came in blood and fire and force. The Pictish witches saw the writing on the wall as it magically infused itself on the caves. At the same time, the seers foretold a wash of their way of life, again showing violence and death to those powerful in the ancient ways of magic, so they began saving it on stones, hidden meanings, in stories, in their families. But as time passed, they knew it would not be enough. Three great families were chosen as the vessels and keepers of the magic. Families already powerful and plentiful to ensure the magic and olde ways would not be forgotten. One family chosen to hold all the powers in one, dormant unless needed, joined their ranks. The magic sleeping within their ancestors unless the powers called out. The one family remained secret from all but the three and the one who performed the magic spell to ensure the continuation of the earth. They were to call on the ancestors of the one family if their lines became in peril or their magic waned from disuse. History handed down from one generation to the next. They kept up their way of life, of the blessings of olde magic. The animal callers, the fire and air callers, the earth and water, and those who possessed all. As time passed, fewer believed. More turned to the new religion as the men came. Violence abounded. New missionaries came. Some retained their knowledge and tried to keep the olde ways alive. But, as all of history knows, these stories become legends, myths, and so people forgot their true calling, the meaning of the symbols lost in time. The magic, dormant except in a few gifted who kept the magic alive. Until the era of peril, when all balance was lost. Until then, it lay hidden in time and blood.
